ASCENSION

A British Colony situated in the South Atlantic, 700 miles north-west of St Helena. First occupied in 1815, it was retained as a Royal Naval Base from 1816 until 1922 when it became a dependency of St Helena. Stamps first issued in 1922 prior to which British stamps were used.

BAHRAIN

An archipelago some 20 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia, about half way down the Persian Gulf. An independent Sheikdom, it had an Indian postal administration from 1884 until 1948 during which time stamps of India were used and then later overprinted for use from 1933. A British postal administration operated from 1948 until 1965 overprinting and surcharging the stamps of Great Britain up until 1960.

BARBADOS

The most northern of the West Indian Islands, Barbados had been a British Colony since 1625 and became independent in 1966. Stamps first issued in 1852.

BASUTOLAND

A former British Crown colony which became an independent Kingdom in 1966 and was renamed Lesotho. The country is entirely surrounded by South Africa and issued its first stamps in 1933. Prior to this the stamps from the Cape of Good Hope and South Africa were in use.

BRITISH POSTAL AGENCIES IN EASTERN ARABIA

Great Britain stamps surcharged in Annas and Rupees and later Naye Paise were first issued in 1948 for use in certain Arab States in Eastern Arabia. They were valid for use in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Muscat and Doha & Umm Said in Qatar as well as being used in Bahrain and Kuwait.

FALKLAND ISLAND DEPENDENCIES

In 1944 stamps of the Falkland Islands were overprinted for use in the Dependencies of Graham Land, South Georgia, South Orkneys and South Shetlands. In 1946 these were superseded by the first single issue for use in all the Dependencies.

FALKLAND ISLANDS

A British Crown Colony in the South Atlantic 300 miles east of the Straits of Magellan. Sheep farming is the principal industry. Stamps first issued in 1878.

FIJI

The Fiji Islands are situated in the South Pacific approximately 2,000 miles east of Tasmania and 1,100 miles north of New Zealand. A former British Colony which became Independent in 1970, the islands are of volcanic origin. Stamps first issued in 1870.

Gibraltar has been a British Possession since 1704 situated at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Stamps first issued in 1886 prior to which the stamps of Great Britain were in use.

HONG KONG

A small island at the mouth of the Canton River in China. Hong Kong became a British Possession in 1841 and the first Post Office was established in October 1841. The first stamps were issued in 1862. Hong Kong became part of The People's Republic of China in July 1997.

INDIA

An immense peninsula lying to the south of Asia, which was until 1947 part of the British Empire. Stamps were first issued in 1854 under the East India Administration and from July 1852 until October 1854 a series of embossed stamps were issued in the Scinde disrict.

KUWAIT

An Arabian port on the Persian Gulf, Kuwait was originally under British protection from 1899. In 1921 responsibility for the Kuwait postal service was passed to the Iraq Post Officice and stamps were first issued in 1923 with Indian stamps being overprinted. Later in 1948 postal services were run by the British and surcharged GB stamps were introduced. In 1959 The British Agency Post Offices closed and responsibility for postal services passed to the Kuwait Government.

LEEWARD ISLANDS

A British Crown Colony in the West Indies, comprising the five presidencies of Antigua (including Barbuda and Redonda), Montserrat, St Christopher (including Nevis and Anguilla), the British Virgin Islands and Dominica. Each presidency issued its own stamps but the Leeward Islands stamps were vaild throughout the colony. Stamps first issued in 1890 until July 1956 when the Federal Colony was dissolved.

MALAYA - JOHORE

The State of Johore first issued stamps in 1876 and a British adviser was appointed to the State in 1914. In February 1948 the State joined the Federation of Malaya.

MALAYA - MALACCA

One of the Straits Settlements, stamps were first issued in 1948 when the state joined the Federation of Malaya. Issues after 1965 were inscribed "Melaka".

MALAYA - NEGRI SEMBILAN

A federation of smaller states reconstituted in 1886. In 1891 Straits Settlements stamps were used in the State as well as the first stamps of Negri Sembilan being issued in the same year.

MALAYA - PENANG

One of the original Straits Settlements, stamps were first issued in 1948 when it joined the Federation of Malaya. Issues from 1965 are inscribed "PULAU PINANG".

MALAYA - PERAK

Perak issued its first stamps in 1878 and joined the Federated Malay States in 1896. The general issues of the Federated Malaya States were used from 1901 until 1935 after which Perak started issuing its own stamps again.

MALAYA - SELANGOR

Selangor issued its first stamps in 1881 prior to which the stamps of the Straits Settlements were used. In 1896 it joined the Federated Malay States (FMS) and used FMS issues from 1901 until 1935 after which it started issuing its own stamps once again.
