Formerly Great Britain's oldest overseas posession, Newfoundland was discovered by Cabot in 1497 and was captured in 1583 by Sir Humphrey Gilbert. The first stamps were issued in 1857 and continued up until 1949 when Newfoundland became the tenth province of the Dominion of Canada.
