Brunei was occupied by the Japanese from December 1941 to June 1945 and current Brunei stamps were overprinted with Japanese characters and issued in 1942.

BURMA - JAPANESE OCCUPATION
Burma was occupied by the Japanese from early 1942 until the recapture of Rangoon in 1945. The Burma Independence Army were given permission by the Japanese to overprint existing stocks of stamps with the Burmese emblem of a peacock and were first issued in May 1942. In August 1942 the Japanese Directorate-General took control of postal services and the peacock overprints were withdrawn from sale. Surcharged Japanese stamps were is use in 1942 being replaced by stamps specially prepared for use by the Burmese Government given independence by the Japanese in 1943.
