BECHUANALAND

Surrounded by South Africa, the territory to the south of the Molopo River was constituted the Crown Colony of British Bechuanaland in 1885 and land to the north of the Molopo was proclaimed a Protectorate. Stamps were first issued in British Bechuanaland in 1885 and in the Protectorate in 1888. In 1966 the country became independent and was renamed Botswana.

BRITISH EAST AFRICA

Originally comprised all of East Africa under British administration and stamps were issued by the British East Africa Company. It became a protectorate in 1895 and in 1903 was amalgamated with Uganda. Stamps first issued in 1890.

BRITISH GUIANA

A former British Crown Colony situated on the north-east coast of South America, British Guiana finally came under British control in 1814. It became independent in 1966 and the country was renamed Guyana. First stamps were issued in 1850 prior to that the stamps of Great Britain were used. Famous for its issue of the rarest stamp in the world, the 1856 1c black on magenta (SG 23, Scott 13) of which it is reported only one example exists.

CEYLON

A former Crown Colony which became a Dominion of the British Commonwealth in 1948 and finally a republic in 1972 changing its name to Sri Lanka. An island of some 25,000 square miles lying to the south of India. Stamps first issued in 1857.

CYPRUS

An island at the eastern end of the Mediterranean. Administered by Great Britain since 1878, in 1925 it was declared a British Colony and in 1960 became a Republic. Stamps first issued in 1880 prior to which unoverprinted stamps of Great Britain were in use.

FALKLAND ISLANDS

A British Crown Colony in the South Atlantic 300 miles east of the Straits of Magellan. Sheep farming is the principal industry. Stamps first issued in 1878.

The former Colony and Protectorate of Gambia is the most northerly of the former British West African Dependencies which became Independent in 1965. Stamps first issued in 1869.

A former British Colony and Protectorate situated in the Gulf of Guinea on the west coast of Africa. The country was given Independence in 1957 and renamed Ghana. Stamps first issued in 1875.

INDIA - EXPEDITIONARY FORCES

Stamps of India were overprinted for use by Indian troops for use in various military campaigns. In 1900 until 1923 stamps overprinted CEF were issued for use by The China Expeditionary Force in the North China and in 1914 until 1921 stamps overprinted IEF were used by Indian Expeditionary Forces during World War I.

LEEWARD ISLANDS

A British Crown Colony in the West Indies, comprising the five presidencies of Antigua (including Barbuda and Redonda), Montserrat, St Christopher (including Nevis and Anguilla), the British Virgin Islands and Dominica. Each presidency issued its own stamps but the Leeward Islands stamps were vaild throughout the colony. Stamps first issued in 1890 until July 1956 when the Federal Colony was dissolved.

MALAYA - FEDERATED STATES

The Federated Malay States were created in July 1896 when the States of Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor were organised together on a federal basis. Stamps were first issued in 1900 until 1935 when the individual states issued their own stamps.

MALAYA - JOHORE

The State of Johore first issued stamps in 1876 and a British adviser was appointed to the State in 1914. In February 1948 the State joined the Federation of Malaya.

MALAYA - NEGRI SEMBILAN

A federation of smaller states reconstituted in 1886. In 1891 Straits Settlements stamps were used in the State as well as the first stamps of Negri Sembilan being issued in the same year.

MALAYA - NEGRI SEMBILAN (SUNGEI UJONG)

A federation of smaller states reconstituted in 1886. Sungei Ujong was taken under British protection in 1874 and absorbed into Negri Sembilan by Treaty in August 1895. Stamps were first issued in 1878 and continued up until 1895.
