Situated in the Indian Ocean to the West of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), the first stamps were issued in 1906 by overprinting Ceylon KEVII issues. The Maldives became a republic on the 1 January 1953 but reverted to a sultanate on the 29 November 1953 until November 1968 when it became an Independent Republic.
