An island in the Indian Ocean some 500 miles east of Madagascar, it was captured from the French in 1810 and became a British Crown Colony. Its first stamps, the famous 1d and 2d "Post Office Mauritius" were issued in 1847 and are amongst the rarest stamps in the world. The island became Independent from Great Britain in 1968.
