Muscat commands the entrance to the Persian Gulf and the first post office was opened in 1864 under Indian administration. Indian stamps were used prior to its first stamps being issued in 1944 by overprinting KGVI issues of India. From December 1947 until March 1948 there was a Pakistani postal administration and stamps of Pakistan were used. In 1948 a British administration took over and issued stamps overprinted in annas and rupees. These issues will be found listed under British Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia. In 1966 the British administration closed and the Oman Sultanate took over.
