A very small island about halfway between the Marshall and Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was formerly part of the German Empire but surrendered in 1914 to Australian forces. The first post office was opened in 1908 and stamps of the Marshall Islands were in use until 1914. The first stamps were issued in 1916 by overprinting stamps of Great Britain and the island was mandated to the British Empire. In 1924 the island transferred to Australia and became a republic in 1968.
