Discovered by Captain Cook, Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific about 900 miles east of Brisbane. The first settlers arrived in 1788 from New South Wales and the island was transferred to Tasmanian authority in September 1844 and became a seperate settlement in November 1856 under the control of the Governor of New South Wales. The island was declared an Australian Territory in July 1914 and Its first stamps were issued in 1947. Prior to this stamps from New South Wales were used and then from 1913 until 1947 issues from the Commowealth of Australia.
