Formerly known as British Central Africa, the former British Protectorate of Nyasaland lies along the southern and western shores of Lake Nyassa. The protectorate known as the "Nyasaland Districts" was declared in May 1891 the title being changed to "British Central Africa" in February 1893. Stamps first issued in 1891 and the title of Protectorate was changed again in July 1907. Nyasaland attained independence in July 1964 when the country was renamed Malawi.
