Situated to the west of the Punjab, Bahawalpur was a former feudatory state which was briefly independent following the partition of India in 1947. Stamps first issued in August 1947, they only had validity for use within the State. For external mail stamps of Pakistan were used. Bahawalpur became part of the Dominion of Pakistan in October 1947 and its stamps continued to be used on internal mail up until 1953.
