Papua comprises the south-eastern portion of the island of New Guinea. It was formerly known as British New Guinea and issued its first stamps in 1901. Prior to this the stamps of Queensland were used. The island was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 until 1945. After the war, stamps of Australia were in use up until 1953. In 1952 Papua became a combined territory with New Guinea as an Australian Trust Territory.
