A Crown Colony situated in the Pacific about half-way between Australia and America. The island was first colonized by mutineers from HM Ship "Bounty" in 1790 and largely remained unknown to the outside world until 1808 when an Americian whaler called there. Mail from the island is known from the 1840's but a regular mail service was not introduced until 1920. As there were no stamps available at this time letters were allowed free postage as long as they carried a cachet or manuscript endorsement. At least 20 different type of cachets are known many of which are very rare. Stamps of New Zealand were also used on the island from the 1920's until 1940 when the first stamps were issued.
