In 1900 the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific were partitioned between the United States and Germany. The German Islands were occupied by New Zealand forces in 1914 and stocks of German stamps were overprinted for use. In 1935 the name on the stamps was changed to Western Samoa. Stamps first issued in 1877 when the islands formed an Independent Kingdom. The islands were administered by New Zealand up until 1962.
