Situated in north-west Borneo, Sarawak was originally given to an Englishman, Sir James Brooke, by the Sultan of Borneo in 1842 and in 1888 was placed under British protection. It became a British Crown Colony in 1946 until 1963 when it became a state of the Federation of Malaysia. Stamps first issued in 1869. Early issues usually have no gum.
