A scattered archipelago of about 1,000 islands and low-lying coral atolls in the Pacific which lie to the east of Papua New Guinea and north-east of Australia. A former British Protectorate, prior to the issue of its first stamps in 1907 the stamps of New South Wales were used on the islands but cancelled on arrival in Sydney. Occupied by the Japanese during WWII until the British gained control in 1945. In 1976 the islands became a Self-Government and in 1978 were granted independence.
