A former British Protectorate situated on the east coast of Africa. Egyptian post offices opened in 1876 and the stamps of Egypt were in use until 1884. From 1887 Indian stamps were used until June 1903 when the Protectorate Post Office was opened and Indian stamps overprinted British Somilaland were issued. During WWII the country was occupied by Italian forces from 1940 to 1941 until the country was retaken by the British in 1942. Somaliland Protectorate stamps were withdrawn in June 1960 when the country was granted independence and became a republic.
