A part of the former German East Africa and occupied by Allied British forces during WWI. The first stamps were issued in 1917 by overprinting KUT stamps "G.E.A". In 1922 the country became a British Mandated Territory by The League of Nations and the first stamps were issued in that year. In 1933 Tanganyika became part of the joint East African postal administration and subsequently stamps of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika were used. In 1961 the country became independent and the following year a republic and is now known as Tanzania.
