An archipelago in the South Pacific comprising of one hundred and sixty nine islands many of them volcanic. Also known as the Friendly Islands, a name given by Captain Cook because of the friendly reception he received. The Tonga islands are a Protectorate Kingdom formed by a Treaty of Friendship with the British in May 1900. The first post office was established in 1885 and the first stamps issued in 1886.
