A former independent state in South Africa governed by the Boers. In the 1850's the British came to an understanding with the Boer Republics granting independence to the South African Republic (ZAR). Britain annexed again the ZAR in 1877 as a way of resolving border disputes between the Boers and the Zulus during a period known as the First British Occupation. In 1881 the Transvaal regained its independence or Second Republic after the First Boer War. After ther discovery of large deposits of gold in 1885 and the fear that the British had designs on the region, the Boers made a pre-emptive strike on the British in 1899 which resulted in the Second Boer War. The first stamps were issued in 1870 until 1910 when Transvaal became a province of the Union of South Africa.
