A former British Crown Colony island in the Caribbean lying just north on Trinidad. The first post office was opened in 1841 and stamps of Great Britain were in use from 1858 until 1860. The first stamps were issued in 1879. In 1899 Tobago was made a Ward of Trinidad and ceased issuing its own stamps in 1896. It remained a Ward of Trinidad until August 1962 when Trinidad and Tobago became an independent Commonwealth country and then finally in 1976 a republic.
