Situated in the South Atlantic, 1,300 miles from St Helena, Tristan da Cunha has an area of only 18 square miles. The island was first settled in 1817 but the first recorded letter from the island was in 1836. Prior to the issue of its first stamps in 1952, mail was cancelled from 1908 until 1948 by various cachets of which twelve different types are recorded some of which are very rare.
