A former British Protectorate in East Africa, the area was placed under the charter of The British East Company in 1884 and was ruled as a protectorate from 1894. Stamps first issued 1895 by missionaries until 1902 when Uganda was transferred to British East Africa. Uganda became an independent country in 1962.
