British forces under Colonel (later General) Baden-Powell were held under siege during the Boer War in South Africa in the town of Mafeking, situated to the north of Cape Town and west of Johannesburg. The siege lasted from October 1899 until May 1900 during which time both Cape of Good Hope and Bechuanaland stamps were overprinted for use as well as special issues featuring Sergeant-Major Goodyear and General Baden-Powell.
