Situated in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles north of New Zealand, the Gilbert & Ellice Islands have a total area of 333 square miles. A British Protectorate since 1892 the islands became a Crown Colony in 1915 becoming two separate Crown Colonies in 1976 when the islands were renamed Kiribati and Tuvalu which finally became Independent in 1978 & 1979. Stamps first issued in 1911 prior to which the stamps of New Zealand were in use.
