An Arabian port on the Persian Gulf, Kuwait was originally under British protection from 1899. In 1921 responsibility for the Kuwait postal service was passed to the Iraq Post Officice and stamps were first issued in 1923 with Indian stamps being overprinted. Later in 1948 postal services were run by the British and surcharged GB stamps were introduced. In 1959 The British Agency Post Offices closed and responsibility for postal services passed to the Kuwait Government.
