Formerly known as New Britain, New Guinea comprises a group of islands north-east of Australia. It was part of the former German Colony and German issues were in use from 1888 until 1914 when Australian forces occupied the islands. The first stamps were issued in 1915 by surcharging German New Guinea and Marshall Islands stamps and registration labels. These were later replaced by by overprinting Australian stamps N.W. Pacific Islands. In 1921 a civil administration for the Mandated Territory of New Guinea was established.
