Named after Cecil Rhodes who brought it under British control, Rhodesia is that part of South Africa lying to the north of Bechuanaland and the Transvaal. It was formerly administered by the British South Africa Company. Stamps issued from 1890 until 1925 when it was split into Northern and Southern Rhodesia. In 1953 the amalgamation of the territories of Northern and Southern Rhodesia and the Nyasaland Protectorate bought about the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In 1980 Rhodesia became a Republic and was re-named Zimbabwe.
