A British Crown Colony, the island of St Helena is situated in the South Atlantic about 1,100 miles west of Africa. It is famous as the place of exile of Napoleon Bonaparte where he resided from 1816 until his death in 1821. During the Boer War several camps were situated on the island for Boer prisoners. Stamps first issued in 1856.
