A former British Crown Colony, Singapore was established as an important trading station by the British East India Company in 1819 thanks to the work of Sir Stamford Raffles. Occupied by the Japanese in 1942 until the end of WWII. It ceased being a Crown Colony in 1957 and became an independent republic in 1965. Stamps first issued in 1948.
