A former British Protectorate in Southern Africa situated between South Africa in the west and Mozambique in the east. Prior to a British Protectorate, a Tripartite Government was set up between the British and Transvaal governments and the Swazi king in 1889 and overprinted Transvaal stamps were first issued in that year. These were in use until November 1894 when they became invalid. In March 1902 the country became a British Protectorate and un-overprinted stamps of Transvaal and later stamps of South Africa were in use. In 1933 the first British Protectorate stamps were issued. In 1968 the country became independent.
