A former German colony on the west coast of Africa which was seized by French and British troops in 1914. The territory was administered under martial law but formally divided between Great Britain and France in October 1920. The first stamps were issued in 1914 by overprinting existing stocks of German stamps. These were replaced in 1915 by overprinting stamps from the Gold Coast. In July 1922 League of Nations mandates were issued for both areas which were transferred to the United Nations in 1946. In 1957 residents of the British mandate voted to join Ghana.
