Situated to the east of Israel, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was formerly part of the Turkish Empire from 1516 to 1918. During WWI the country was overrun by British and Arab forces organised by Colonel T E Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"). In April 1920 the Supreme Council of the Allies gave Great Britain a mandate to administer the area to the east of the Jordan known as Transjordan. The first stamps were issued in 1920 by overprinting stamps of Palestine. In 1946 a treaty was signed with Great Britain and Transjordan was proclaimed an independent kingdom now known as Jordan.
