A former British Crown Colony, Trinidad is the southernmost island in the Caribbean lying just seven miles off the north-eastern coast of Venezuela. The first post office was opened in 1800 and the first stamps in 1847. In 1889 it was united with Tobago into a single Crown Colony and ceased issuing its own stamps in 1909. The united entity, Trinidad and Tobago, obtained its independence from Great Britain in 1962 and became a republic in 1976.
