Situated off the west coast of Britain, from 1801 until 1920 Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. The north-east known as Northern Ireland is still part of the United Kingdom with the rest of Ireland being a republic with an elected president. Stamps were first issued in 1922 by overprinting issues of Great Britain.
