Discovered by Columbus on May 3 1894, the island of Jamaica was a British Possession since 1655 when it was captured from the Spaniards. It is the largest British West Indian island and first issued stamps in 1860 prior to which stamps of Great Britain were used. In 1962 Jamaica was given independence.
