Orginally partially governed by Thailand, early postal services in Kelantan were run by Thai authorities which started in 1895. In July 1909 suzerainty over Kedah was transferred by Thailand to Great Britain and the first stamps were issued in June 1911. The state joined the Federation of Malaya in February 1948.
