Originally a British Colony, which was divided into two provinces - Upper Canada (inhabited mainly by the British and now called Ontario) and Lower Canada (inhabited mainly by the French and now called Quebec). Granted self-government in 1841, and in 1867 Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united to form a self-governing Dominion after the British North America Act was passed. Stamps first issued in the Colonly in 1851 and as a Dominion in 1868.
