A former British Colony, now part of the Union of South Africa, the Cape of Good Hope occupies the most southern part of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese mariner Bartolomo Diaz in 1487, the Dutch colonized it in 1652 and was finally taken by the British in 1806. Stamps first issued in 1853 with the famous "Cape Triangulars".
