An independent sovereign state in Africa stretching southwards from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sudan. British troops occupied the country in 1882 to secure safe passage for ships through the Suez Canal and remained until 1954. During World War I the country become a British Protectorate which lasted until 1922 when an independent kingdom was declared. Stamps first issued in 1866 prior to which the stamps of Great Britain were in use.
